Right-of-way challenges impacting ease of doing business, says GSMA

New Delhi: The continued challenges in rolling out telecom infrastructure are "impacting the ease of doing business" while Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks to connect 600,000 villages in 1,000 days, the GSM Association (GSMA) has said."Despite the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) 2016 RoW rules, there remain multiple challenges at the ground level in rolling out infrastructure," GSMA India senior policy director Manoj Kumar Misra said in a letter to the telecom secretary. Such obstacles, according to Misra, directly affect the ease of doing business, while adding substantial costs and durations to the service providers. The letter comes in the backdrop of Modi's announcement on August 15 to connect 600,000 villages with optic fibre cable-based telecom network within the next 1,000 days. The London-based telecom group also said that the National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP) 2018 also focuses on expanding telecom infrastructure, which it added would be critical for realisation of the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) as well.
