India gears up for record power demand this summer
India is likely to record unprecedented electricity demand this summer, prompting the authorities to gear up to ensure availability of adequate power generation capacity, coal stocks and railway infrastructure along with grid preparedness.The ministries of power, new and renewable energy, coal and railways are rushing preparations as projections within the government and industry suggest that the peak hour energy demand in the summer months is expected to cross 215 GW, an all-time high. Officials in these ministries said they have been sounded and several rounds of discussions have been held to discuss necessary actions. Meanwhile, shares of power companies have risen to 52-week high levels on the Bombay Stock Exchange on expectations of higher capacity utilisation. Coal-based generation grew 7% year-on-year in February while renewable energy generation increased 3.4%.BSE Power Index hit a 52-week high on Thursday.
