PM expresses concern over videos of people crowding

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern at a meeting of his council of ministers on Thursday over pictures and videos of people crowding in public places and roaming around in masks even as he stressed that there is no room for any carelessness or complacency in the wake of falling Covid cases.Modi urged his ministers to ensure that while all steps should be taken to prevent fear mongering or panic among the people, there is a need to educate them that the pandemic has not ended, and any laxity can cause a spurt in cases.“Over the past few days, we all have been seeing pictures and videos of crowded places and people roaming about without masks or social distancing. This is not a pleasant sight, and it should instill a sense of fear in us,” Modi said, according to government sources. He underlined our COVID warriors and frontline workers are powering India’s fight against the global pandemic with full vigor. “We are steadily vaccinating substantial numbers of our nation’s population. Testing is also consistently high,” Modi said.Modi emphasized that at this juncture, there should be no space for carelessness or complacency. “A single mistake would have a far-reaching impact and weaken the fight to overcome COVID-19,” the Prime Minister said. With the numbers being lesser than what they were in the recent months, people may want to venture out, he said, cautioning that all must remember that the threat of COVID-19 is far from over.“Many other nations are witnessing a surge in infections. The virus is also mutating. As ministers, our aim should not be to instill fear but to request people to keep taking all possible precautions so that we are able to move beyond this pandemic in the times to come,” Modi was quoted as having said in the meeting. The Prime Minister also expressed concern at the persistently high number of cases coming from Maharashtra and Kerala.
